Black History Month Poetry Competition

As part of Black History Month celebrations, we ran a poetry competition in school. In sticking with this year’s theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters,’ we encouraged pupils to write poems that celebrated and honoured the resilience, contributions, achievements, and stories of Black women, famous or otherwise.

We had some lovely entries and the top 3 finalists were judged by visiting author, Joyce Harmer, who was very impressed by the overall standard of writing. Congratulations to winning poems by Jaha-Lezibusiso in Year 8 (third place), Musawwir in Year 8 (second place) and Uchindami in Year 12 (first place). Each of the winners received a badge, certificate and book voucher.

Uchindami’s winning poem, a reimagination of Rosa Park’s thoughts during her famous bus journey, has been submitted for the National BHM Poetry Competition.

Architecture Workshops

Year 10 Art and DT pupils were given a creative introduction to architecture when Open City spent the afternoon in their lessons.

Pupils were tasked with designing – then making models of – bus stops, bridges and houses for bears and giraffes!

The university architecture students advised our pupils on routes into the profession, including giving them tips about enhancing their applications with volunteering.

We look forward to seeing which Saracens High School alumnus will be the first to become an architect!

Super Start for Sarries

We love supporting the professional Saracens teams and we’re delighted to see both the men’s and women’s teams in strong positions at this early stage in the premiership seasons.

Saracens Men have won their last four games, with a statement win over local rivals Harlequins last weekend.

Saracens Women started their Premiership campaign with an absolute barnstorming against Loughborough at home.

Both teams have numerous exciting fixtures between now and Christmas at the StoneX Stadium, just 15 minutes walk from our school.

We’re looking forward to cheering on the Saracens Mavericks when the Netball Super League gets underway in February and we’re really excited for their match against Manchester Thunder at Wembley Arena in April!

Oxford University Visit

15 Year 11 pupils attended an academic workshop day at Christ Church College, Oxford.

The pupils were prompted to begin thinking about what their further study options might be and what they should be thinking about now to help them get there.

This was followed by a chance to quiz current Oxford undergraduate students on their experiences in humanities and STEM subjects before a tour of the college and lunch in the Great Hall. What an experience that was!

The day was rounded off by a stimulating academic lecture from a medicine professor which gave our pupils a taste of what university study would be like.

Pre-Apprenticeship Work Placements

Our Pre Apprenticeship students started their work placements this week and have made wonderful first impressions!
The students are going to a range of organisations including Wates Construction, Shawbrook, Saracens RFC, Quinn and Arts Depot. The young people will attend their work placements two days per week alongside the BTEC courses they’re studying in school.
We know our students will make us proud and we look forward to hearing stories from their experience of the workplace.

Boxing Club

This term we have added a new club to our enrichment offering: Boxing.

Each week 20 pupils from across the year groups are led by a professional coach as well as dedicated staff. Through boxing the children are learning discipline, control and resilience.

The club is invitation only and is currently full. However, pupils interested in the club can email Miss Edwards to be added to the waiting list.

Year 12 Geography in Epping Forest

Our Year 12 Geography students went to the Field Studies Centre in Epping Forest for a ‘Carbon Day’.

The day began with a game of ‘guess the tree,’ followed by a number of experiments including carbon storage assessments and measuring surface run-off.

To end their eventful day students produced field sketches of the forest and were treated to an unexpected sighting of a deer!
