This term, the History team launched our ‘Meanwhile… Elsewhere’ projects for Years 7 and 8. These projects allow pupils to broaden their knowledge through researching a significant event that happened elsewhere in the world within the same time period that they are studying.
Year 7 have been constructing answers to enquiries such as ‘what made Baghdad and Constantinople special?’ and ‘did the Normans bring a truckload of trouble in England?’ ‘Meanwhile…Elsewhere’ they learnt about the Gupta Empire, an ancient Indian civilisation.
Year 8 have been constructing answers to enquiries such as ‘why was Britain turned upside down in the 17th Century?’ and ‘how revolutionary was the Age of Revolution?’ ‘Meanwhile…Elsewhere’ they learnt about Nur Jahan, the most powerful empress of the Mughal Empire.
We received some outstanding, and incredibly beautiful, projects from the pupils this term and a huge number of pupils received postcards home and merits for their hard work. Some of the most impressive projects are now on display in our History classrooms, and we hope to add more next term as we launch our second set of ‘Meanwhile… Elsewhere’ projects; this time focusing on the Song Dynasty in China (Year 7) and the story of Caroline Mathilde, Queen of Denmark in the 18th Century (Year 8.)
On Thursday 16 December we will be celebrating the pupils who are always doing the right thing, living our values and showing kindness. These are pupils with great attendance, attitude to learning and very few, if any, incidents. Well done to all of you.
GCSE study begins in earnest in Year 10 and our pupils have risen to the challenge brilliantly.
With mock exams fast approaching we’ve been focusing on helping Year 10 find the right revision technique for them, including showing them how to create a revision timetable. Learning these things early will ensure our pupils get the results they deserve in Year 11.
Year 8 have had an excellent autumn term, making the most of the wonderful opportunities available.
Many students have represented the school in sports events, The Grinch and poetry competitions to name a few.
One of the highlights for the whole Year Group was the assembly with the BBC where pupils learnt about telling their own stories and asked lots of insightful questions. Pupils will have more opportunities to tell their stories in different ways this year, for example ‘Speak Out’ and delivering Learning Group assemblies on issues that are important to them.
During Together We Create, our Arts Week, pupils devised their own performances after participating in workshops with Chicken Shed Theatre and Synergy Theatre.
Pupils learnt from Chalk Line Theatre about political theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and enjoyed a visit to the V&A Museum in central London to look at the theatre exhibition.
The week culminated in pupils performing their devised pieces to one another, competing for Group of the Week! The energy and focus was incredible!
More recently we have been working hard on The Grinch the Panto. The technical crew have learnt how to operate the lights, sound, backstage and curtains, while the cast have also been completely dedicated to preparing for the show.
Everyone’s efforts paid off as the local school, friends and family who came to watch the performances loved it!
We had a great #TogetherWeCreate week where we enjoyed a lot of musical experiences such as a beatboxing workshop and a string orchestra that played Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for us. What fantastic experiences!
We also put together a full band to play for The Grinch the panto. A special thank you to Jairo, Nawar, Jiya, Brett and Brett’s Dad!

This term year 8 have been learning all about volcanoes- which has been very timely with the recent eruption of Mauna Loa in Hawaii! They have created some incredible 3D models of different volcanoes.
Next term both year 10 and year 11 will be heading out to do their GCSE fieldwork. Year 10 are heading to Walton on the Naze to study the effects of coastal protections, and year 11 are heading to Stratford to look at the regeneration efforts.
This term has been filled with hard work and great progress by all.
We introduced Year 7s to Algebra and have been working on mental maths skills. Year 8s have been learning how to represent and interpret data and are growing in confidence with a Cartesian plane. Thinking abstractly about conjectures has been the focus for Year 9 as well as working with solids and other 3D shapes. Year 10 have been learning Trigonometry and Simultaneous Equations while Year 11s have been learning about Functions.
Pupils have begun completing home learning on Sparx which is helping their progress in Maths.
In Years 10 and 11 we have groups of pupils working beyond GCSE content on the Level 2 Further Maths course.
We are looking forward to the It All Adds Up girls’ Maths conference at Oxford University in January as well as the Maths In Action workshop in London in March. February and April will hold the UKMT Intermediate and Junior Maths Challenges, so be sure to keep challenging your brain over the holiday!
This term we welcomed another 20 members of staff, we had our official opening for the new building, our Year 11s sat their GCSE mock exams, we launched our new Sixth Form, and we had our first large scale school production using our new theatre. I should also mention that prior to the new term we received our first ever GCSE examination results for the 20 pupils who sat exams in their community languages. We were delighted that 50% of pupils earned a grade 9, and 95% were grade 7 or higher. Congratulations to all of those pupils.
Mr Olufola and Ms Green have been working hard with other staff to develop our exciting Sixth Form provision, which offers four different pathways. The traditional A Level route will be the most popular, with a broad range of subjects being offered. We are also offering two T Levels (in Health and Digital Production), as well as a Pre-Apprenticeship course, which will prepare pupils for an apprenticeship and give them significant work experience. Finally, there will be a Sports Performance pathway, where pupils can study A Levels or a T Level and make use of Saracens high performance coaches to develop their sporting prowess.
We had anticipated about 130 pupils joining our sixth form in the first year, but we already have applications from 170 young people, with another 9 months to go before they start! I can understand the enthusiasm, particularly around the A Levels being offered, and T Levels which can lead to university or an apprenticeship. Our relationship with Middlesex University means that pupils studying a T Level at Saracens will be guaranteed a place on a related Health or Digital degree course, and students who study health-related degrees at Middlesex are all offered jobs within the NHS.
The formal opening of the new building was a wonderful occasion with the Lord Lieutenant of London, the King’s representative for London, declaring our main building open, and Owen Farrell of Saracens and England men’s rugby teams opening our sports facilities. Some video highlights of this event, along with the recent visits of Maro Itoje and Richard Hill, can be found here: https://saracenshigh.org/videos/
We are so fortunate with our relationships with individuals and organisations linked with the wider Saracens family, which provided funding for our new gym equipment and our theatre staging, curtains, and lighting. At the end of term our creative team, led by Miss Nicoll, created our first large scale school production. Over 50 pupils and staff contributed to The Grinch pantomime which was a lot of fun for all who saw it. What a great way to end the term.
I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday period, and look forward to seeing everyone back in school on January 4th (Year 11) or January 5th (Years 7-10).
