Black History Month
Each October we celebrate Black History Month. This year the theme was ‘Reclaiming Narratives.’
One of our new history teachers, Mr John, gave some wonderful assemblies that highlighted a number of Black women including Evelyn Dove, Mary Seacole and his own grandma.
Alexis in Year 11 was the winner of our annual poetry competition with a poem which also focused on reclaiming the narratives of Black women. Alexis and the other poetry winners were joined by two Saracens players, Samson Adejimi and Kaden Pearce-Paul, for a congratulatory lunch.
At the end of Black History Month we had a drop down afternoon where the whole school was given time to focus on Black history. The afternoon started with a jerk chicken lunch during which we were entertained by a live steel band.
After lunch the houses learnt about different individuals and decorated masks to represent their narratives. The six individuals were: Ulric Cross; Mary Seacole; Walter Tull; Dr. Gladys West; Benjamin Zephaniah; and Andrea Levy.
