Poetry Competition
One of the ways we celebrate Black History Month each year is by running a poetry competition. This year’s finalists enjoyed a special lunch with two Saracens players, who listened to the poems being read out and awarded the young poets with certificates. Seva Kava and Tayo Adegbemile were enormously impressed with our pupils’ creativity and enjoyed a tour of the school with Ms Green.
Congratulations to our winner, Ruwayda, for the poem below. You can read the poems of the other finalists by clicking on the documents below.
Side-by-side
This month, we remember, we honour, we share,
The stories of people who fought to be heard; we care.
They stood up with courage, they stood up with pride,
And faced every challenge they met side-by-side.
They broke through the barriers, opened the door,
Then turned around and opened up more.
They challenged the rules, questioned the game,
Showed that one voice can still make a change.
From science to music, from sports to the arts,
Black voices have shaped us and played major parts.
Their stories are more than just words on a page,
They carry the strength and the lessons of age.
So throughout this month, let these stories be heard,
Let every achievement be more than some words.
Black History isn’t just one month of the year,
It’s all the voices and stories that brought us here.
So remember their names, let their legacies live on,
And carry their courage right now and beyond.
