Badminton Club
What started 12 months ago as a relaxed after-school club has officially grown into one of our most popular extracurricular activities: the SHS Badminton Club.
Running after school every Friday, the club brings together pupils from Years 7-11 and offers a safe space where pupils of all skill levels can play with peers and perfect their shots. The children come to stay active, relieve the pressure after a busy week of lessons, and build friendships across the wider school community. Once the 11-16-year olds go home for the weekend, it’s time for the staff to take to the courts. More recently, some sixth formers have also joined in, challenging staff to some competitive matches.
Beyond the obvious health benefits of staying active, the club has also fostered a fantastic sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Under the guidance of dedicated staff, players have spent the last year mastering serving techniques, learning the rules and developing tactics for singles and doubles.
Now, after a year of consistent practice and improvement, the club is ready to take its first big step forward. Starting next month, the school plans to enter players into the “Barnet Partnership for School Sport” league for the first time. Entering the BP4SS badminton league gives our pupils the opportunity to represent our school and test their skills against some of the best players from across the borough.
PE teacher Ms Quirke is enormously proud of the players who are disciplined in turning up to practice every week:
“The enthusiasm and dedication the students have shown every Friday over the last year has been incredible and moving into league play is the next step for our players. We’re looking forward to watching them participate and perform in the league, and I couldn’t be prouder of how hard everyone has worked to get to this stage.”
