The Saracens Multi-Academy Trust Board has appointed Jo Newman as a governor of Saracens High School. Until her recent retirement, Jo was the Head of the Junior School at North London Collegiate School.
Anthony Smith is standing down as a Trustee in order to complete his Masters at Cambridge. We are so grateful for how diligently he has served us, especially in the area of Safeguarding.
The Board has appointed Mark Hodges, Senior Assistant Head Teacher at Christ College Finchley and their Designated Safeguarding Lead. Mark will take over the duties as the Safeguarding Trustee from Anthony and be a member of the Audit and Risk committee.
There has been lots happening in our school this month for Black History Month.
In Learning Groups and assemblies we’ve been learning about a number of Black men and women who have made a difference, such as Mary Seacole, Floyd Steadman, and the patron of one of the school houses, Maggie Alphonsi.
After the popularity of last year’s poetry competition we ran another competition, this year on the theme ‘saluting our sisters’. We look forward to announcing the winners shortly.
On the final afternoon before the half term break the children will be off timetable. They will learn about the political activist Claudia Jones and create feather mannequins. Young people from years 10-12 with a particular interest in creative writing will attend a workshop in the library with author Joyce Efia Harmer.
After school we are holding a carnival for members of our local community. There will be art and poetry exhibitions as well as stands for various countries represented in our school. There will be music, food and some special guests from the Saracens rugby and netball teams.

On 13th October a group of Year 10 pupils took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge.
Through a variety of interactive activities they learnt about the importance of body language, eye contact, posture, hand gestures, tone, diction, speech writing, and narrative structure. Our pupils were equipped with the skills and confidence to speak their mind and be heard.
They ended the session by preparing and performing a 90 second speech in front of the other participants on a topic of their choice.
We’re grateful to the Speakers Trust and Jack Petchey Foundation for organising this valuable day.

Over three days, our T Level Health students were given an induction into clinical nursing practice by lecturers from Middlesex University.
Hosted in the clinical ward at StoneX Stadium, students were given an overview into basic healthcare skills, note taking, emergency procedures, ward etiquette as well as patient handling, taking observations and medicine management.
The three day course provided a brilliant opportunity for students to apply their classroom learning and gain hands-on experience of a hospital ward.

Our Year 11 geographers went on a visit to Stratford in east London. By comparing old Stratford with the redevelopment around the Olympic Park they could learn about regeneration.
The young people conducted various research tasks including a pedestrian count, vehicle count, an environmental quality survey and a first impressions word bubble. These were completed in six different sites, giving the pupils plenty of data for their evaluation back at school.
Pupils focused on the main question of whether Stratford’s regeneration was successful. Analysing and assessing the data they collected on the trip will help prepare pupils for their mock exam after the half term break.

Year 10 and 11 single science pupils were given the incredible opportunity of attending the New Scientist Live exhibition at the ExCel Centre in London.
Pupils were given hands-on experience of robots and telescopes as well as listening to talks from scientists and psychologists. One of our pupils, Khaled, was even invited onto stage with Ginny Smith (science writer and presenter) during the ‘Hack Your Brain’ talk.
The live stream to the International Space Station was quite remarkable. The young people had the opportunity to speak to an astronaut and ask questions.
However, the stand that most captivated our pupils was that which showed the engineering of a race car!
