Our Year 8 historians enjoyed the enormous privilege of meeting one of the brave young men who fought for peace during World War II.
To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe following World War 2), BBC Newsround came to our school to film a group of our pupils meeting war veteran Mervyn Kersh. The pupils heard of Mervyn’s experience of war, including how he joined the army at 18 and helped liberate Bergen Belsen concentration camp.
Madison, one of the pupils, reflects on the unique experience of meeting someone with firsthand experience of such a devastating conflict:
My experience during the interview was filled with mixed emotions, such as being shocked at Mervyn’s adventures and sightings, being quite sad about his experiences while fighting in the war, but also being in awe and adoration of his medals and awards. Nevertheless, he was a brave and courageous soldier, who did his part amazingly and freed many malnourished and innocent people.
