Abilities Day for Year 9
By Lexie, Year 9
For Making Memories in January, Year 9 had other abilities day. We learnt some new sports and gained a deeper respect for people with other abilities. Activities included:
Wheelchair Rugby
Wheelchair rugby is where you play rugby but you’re in a wheelchair and can pass in any direction. We were shown a demonstration of how to play and then we were given the instructions and after we played a few matches. Wheelchair rugby was fun and exciting because it was a new skill and a new game we were all learning.
Sign Language
In sign language we learnt how to say basic phrases such as “hello,” “good morning,” “goodbye,” etc. It was good to learn so that we’ll be able to have a basic conversation with a deaf person.
Building With Radios
In building with radios we worked in groups. Half of the group went into a separate room while the other half built something. The non-building half then tried to recreate that shape following descriptions over the radio. This activity taught us how important communication is and to be patient with others.
Sitting Volleyball/Netball
In volleyball/netball we sat on the floor or on our knees while we played games of volleyball or netball. This activity taught us the importance of clear communication.
Cup Stacking
In cup stacking we had to stack cups as fast as we could and whoever stacked the cups the fastest won. It was really fun and also taught us how to focus and be patient.
This day was exciting and we all left having learnt something new.
