Science Week
The theme of National Science Week this year was ‘Change and Adapt’ and each year group, from 7-13, attended an assembly around these topics.
Pupils in Years 7-10 carried out practicals in their science lessons:
Year 7: chemical v physical changes
Year 8: decay of bread in different conditions
Years 9 and 10 – rates of chemical change
There were a couple of science-themed visits during the week too. Our A Level chemists extracted trimyristin from nutmeg at London Metropolitan University. While, closer to home, 60 of our ‘scientists of the half term’ enjoyed a ‘humanitarian aid challenge day’ at the RAF museum.
A firm favourite of Science Week are the hatching chicks! This year the children were able to watch 6 rare breeds of chicks hatch and grow before being collected by a farm after their two week sojourn!
In another science classroom pupils watched 50 caterpillars change and adapt into beautiful butterflies which we then released into nature.
We are extremely proud of the 20 pupils from Years 9-11 who have submitted 800 word essays for the Young Science Writer Award in the hope of winning the £1000 cash prize!
It’s been a wonderful week of shining the spotlight on science and showing how relevant science is to our everyday lives.
